VCRTA participated in their first Spring Service Project. In an effort to help combat child food insecurity in Vigo County and the wider Wabash Valley, VCRTA members collected individually wrapped nutritional food items for the Backpack Program.
Jennifer Buell, from the Catholic Charities Backpack Program, explained the purpose of the project and provided some key facts to consider and related a few heart grabbing stories. VCRTA members learned that there are over 13,000 people that are food insecure and that 1,000 backpacks are sent out every Friday during the school year to help address the overwhelming need.
VCRTA members collected five extra large boxes, or approximately 50 pounds, of nutritional individually wrapped food items and collected more than $160 in monetary donations to support the Backpack Program.
